BACKUP DIRECTHow do I install the agent?
This tutorial will guide you through the process of installing your Attix 5 Desktop and Laptop (DL) software on your computer:
- After you completed the previous web-based registration process you should have been instructed to download your customised agent to the desktop of your computer
- If this is not the case and you cannot locate your installer please contact our Support Team on 0800 0789 438
- To get started with the installer double click on the A5DLW32v6 (or similar depending on your operating environment eg. A5DLW64v6) installer which you downloaded
- You may see a warning message regarding a digital signature for the program. If you downloaded the installer as directed and it has the A5DLW32v6 (or similar depending on your operating environment eg. A5DLW64v6) file name then it is safe to proceed
- Click Run to proceed with the install
- Click Next to proceed
- At this point the installer will ask for a location on your hard drive to install the agent.
- It is recommended that you use the default location as shown below, however if you know of a specific alternative then you can enter it manually or click Change to browse for a location
- Click Next
- Click Next to begin installing the agent with the settings you have given
- You may see a box warning that the installer is attempting to make changes to your computer
- You should always check that the source of the warning is the program that you are running or expecting to see.
- In this case we can see that the warning has come from A5DW32v6.msi (or similar depending on your operating environment eg. A5DLW64v6.msi)which is what we clicked on the desktop, it is therefore safe to proceed.
- Click Allow to permit the installer to access your computer
- The installer will run and display various messages as it performs the necessary tasks
- Upon successful installation you will see a notification.
- As a default the Attix 5 Backup Professional agent will run after clicking Finish, you can uncheck the box if you do not want the agent to run immediately
- Click Finish to exit the installer and run the agent
- You should then see the default startup view of the agent which we have just installed
- There are two options when running the agent for the first time. If you are a new customer you can choose to create a new backup account using the top option (default)
- Alternatively you can choose to connect your agent to an existing backup account if you have one. If you wish to do this please see the separate relevant tutorial.
- Click next to continue with creating a new account
- At this point you will be asked to enter the login credentials that uniquely identify your account.
- IMPORTANT: these details will be required to login to your online account, or to reinstall the agent at a later date. You must therefore keep them safe and available for the duration of your use of the agent
- When creating your username please use the following format so that we can easily identify your account should you require assistance from our support team.
- Home users: <SURNAME>_<COMPUTER NAME>
- Business users: <COMPANY NAME>_<COMPUTER NAME>
- Click in the various fields to complete the required details
- You are required to enter your password twice in order to ensure it has been entered correctly.
- The password can be of your choosing, but we recommend you protect the security of your account by using at least 8 characters and some capital letters and numbers.
- Likewise you will need to enter an Encryption Key which is used to encrypt your data in a unique way linked to your personal key. For security reasons it must be 8 characters or more.
- IMPORTANT: This encryption key is known only to you, the Backup Direct Support Team have no access to it and cannot retrieve it if lost. You must keep this key safe, if you do not then any data stored at the data centre will be irretrievable should you need to re-install the agent
- Once you have entered all the required details click Next to continue
- The additional details are required to validate your account. You will need to fill them out accordingly.
- Click in the respective fields to enter your details
- Please note that unless you have been explicitly provided with a code to enter in the Partner Code field you need to enter None, otherwise your install may not be successful
- Once your details are complete click Next to proceed
- You will then be asked about your connection settings. The default option is to use a broadband or other permanent connection.
- If you are using a dial-up connection then you may have some issues using the backup agent. Please contact the Support Team on 0800 0789 438
- Click next to proceed
- You will then be prompted to choose an automatic backup schedule, this stage is not covered in this tutorial. Please see the designated video on selecting files and scheduling backups for more information
- Click Next to continue
- The Attix5 agent uses a series of folders in order to function correctly. At this point it is possible to view and change the location of these folders.
- It is recommended that you leave the defaults selected. If you need to use alternative folder locations, for example on a NAS drive, then please contact Support on 0800 0789 438
- Click Next to continue
- The page should show a summary of all the details and settings which you have just configured.
- Please check them and use the Back button if you need to return and change any of the details
- When you are happy to proceed with the details listed click Next
- You should receive a confirmation which indicates your account has been successfully created with the settings you selected. The confirmation will also list your Account limit (amount of data you can backup) which will vary depending on what you purchased from us
- Click OK to exit
- We have now covered how to install the Attix5 Desktop and Laptop Agent on your computer and use it to create yourself an account.
Please see later tutorials for information on selecting, backing up, and restoring data.
