BACKUP DIRECTHow do I restore files from the web portal?
This tutorial will cover restoring files using the alternative web-based method present in Attix5 DL software.
- If you want to perform a restore using the agent installed on your machine please see the relevant alternative tutorial.
- The web method can be used in scenarios. For instance where you need access to your backed up files from a machine which does not have the agent installed (for instance if you are on holiday and visit an internet cafe)
- First open your internet browser of choice.
- We now need to navigate to the designated Attix5 Website to access your account
- Click in the address bar to enter the following web address: www.backupdirect.net/A5web -(Type it exactly as you see here into your own web browser or click the hyperlink)
- Upon navigating to this page you will see some information describing the service and a list of login details which are required.
- Firstly you will need your Group Name, this is allocated by Backup Direct when you create you account. If you are not sure what to enter then you can view it in the agent. To do this follow these sub-steps:
- Provided you have the Attix5 Agent running you can click in the bottom right corner to bring up the welcome screen.
- Once in the Attix5 agent you need to click on the Tools menu
- Then click Options
- Your Groupname and Username can be seen directly below, make a note of them.
- We now need to return to the web browser to enter the details
- Enter the Group Name you noted down
- Then enter your account username
- Then enter your password and encryption key which you should have recorded when you created them
- Then click Login to submit the details and proceed to your account
- You will see a welcome page with a tool bar and a series of icons along the top representing the available options in the web portal. You should also see a grey bar on the left hand side containing a series of folder names and reference to Last backup and Prev. Backup. By clicking on one of these headings it is possible to access either the most recent backup, or historical sets of data with different versions of the files you chose to backup.
- To demonstrate try clicking on the top level of the folder structure
- Click again to keep moving through the structure
- The number and naming of folders you have to click through will be determined by the structure which was present when the files were initially backed up.
- Upon reaching the bottom level of a folder structure you should see that files have appeared in the central window. This means you have reached the bottom of the folder structure and that invidual files can now be selected for action.
- Check the box next to the desired file(s) to select them
- There are a range of actions which can now be performed. The most common being to download the selected file
- To do this click the large download icon on the top toolbar
- You will then be prompted to choose a location to restore the files to which can be anywhere within My Computer. It is normally easiest to download the files to the desktop for ease of location later.
- Select Desktop from the left hand pane
- The files will be downloaded in a single Compressed Folder which contains the various files and folders from the backup
- Click Save to select that location and begin restoring the files
- Once the download is complete you will see a dialogue box indicating completion. You can directly access the compressed folder or or close to look at it later.
- Click Open to access the file directly.
- If you see a security warning directly afterwards then do not be alarmed, it is a routine Security Protocol of Internet Explorer and some other browsers
- Click Allow in order to access the downloaded file
- You will notice that as you open this folder there is a subfolder which is named according to the date at which the restore was performed.
- Click on the folder. Much like the web interface you will see that the original folder structure has been preserved.
- You have now completed a restore from the Attix5 Web portal. This process can be repeated as required.
- As an alternative it is possible to restore and email files directly to an email account of your choosing. This feature can be used to pass files directly to somebody else, or increase the security of your own restore by emailing the files to yourself.
- To access this option click the Email button in the top toolbar
- You will then see a form displayed in the internet browser. When emailing a file from your Backup Selection you need to enter details into this form in a similar way to a normal email.
- Once you have selected recipients and a message click Send
- We will now look at the Briefcase feature which can be useful when you are travelling or away from your normal computer.
- It allows direct upload and download of files to a central and secure web location in parallel to your normally backed up files
- To examine this feature click the Briefcase tab
- Files that you wish to upload need to be placed in a folder. To create a new folder and enter a name for the folder click Create
- Once the folder has been created click Upload to select the desired files
- You can upload up to 5 files in one batch, however these files cannot total more than 10MB
- Click Browse to begin searching for a file to backup.
- Use the browsing window to select your desired file(s)
- Once you have browsed for the whole batch of files then click Upload
- Once the upload is complete the file will appear in the central panel and is now present in your Briefcase
- This concludes a tour of the Attix5 Web portal features
- You can securely logout of your online account by clicking the Logout button
We have now covered restoring files from the Attix5 DL web portal via download, email and use of the briefcase.
