Backup Direct help support local charity by sponsoring King Bladud's Pigs project
November 17, 2008 - Backup Direct are proud to present the newest addition to their service team – a 3ft by 5ft fibreglass pig named Pigabyte.
Pigabyte was one of 105 model pigs produced by King Bladuds Pigs, a public art event organised to celebrate Bath’s origins and artists. The individual pigs were uniquely decorated by local artists and displayed throughout Bath city centre during the summer of 2008. The idea for the event came from Ulm, Germany, where a similar group produced a variety of 6ft tall storks. The Bath pig concept was taken from King Bladud, the legendary founder of the city.
In order to fund the event, organisers asked local companies to sponsor individual pigs. The sponsor would come up with a design idea and an assigned artist would decorate them. This is how Backup Direct got involved.
‘We got involved with the project because it looked like a lot of fun’, commented Brett Raynes, director of Backup Direct. ‘After initially agreeing to sponsor a pig, we realised that we also needed to give the artist an idea to work around. Because we work in data protection and encryption, one of the guys in the office suggested that we cover the pig in binary code, and include a hidden message within it. We thought that could tie in nicely with a competition, so we ran with it’.
With the binary theme in place, and design work from local artist, Ben Garrod, the blank canvas pig soon became known as Pigabyte. ‘It seemed like the natural name for him to take really.’
Whilst on display outside Bath Abby, Backup Direct also ran a competition for anybody who could decipher the binary code message written across the pig. Hundreds of entries later, the competition winner was announced - 11 year old, Edward Henderson, who correctly translated the message ‘Backup Direct – Your Business in Safe Hands’.
To culminate the event, all 105 pigs were gathered together and auctioned off to raise money for Bath’s Two Tunnels project. Not being able to bare the thought of Pigabyte in possession of another owner, Backup Direct successfully bid to bring him back home. ‘In the end, we felt that we had to keep him’, continued Raynes.
That wasn’t without its own slice of drama, however. Whilst the pig auction was taking place, Raynes was otherwise engaged, and had to get his wife to conduct the bidding over the phone whilst holidaying in Denmark. ‘She’ll admit that it was a surreal moment; conducting an international bidding war for a fibreglass pig from a hotel room in Copenhagen’.
After some surprising competition, Backup Direct regained control of Pigabyte. He now stands guard in the Backup Direct office, occasionally drawing the odd bemused looks from visitors.
