The Backup Direct™ Value Promise
Our claim is simple: Backup Direct™ represents the best value for money
business-grade online backup service in the UK.
How charging for storage costs you more
Most of our competitors have a complex and variable pricing structure based on
'compressed storage' designed to confuse users and bill increasing amounts month
by month. It works like this:
- Pricing is based on a certain volume (GB) of compressed storage
- Because your data (the information you wish to protect) is uncompressed
on your computers, you are forced to assume a certain compression ratio for your
data in order to select the correct package
- You then guess how much storage you need to buy and sign a contract.
Apart from having to do some basic maths, this is not too onerous. But there
are traps:
- The estimates given for compression ratios are often 'optimistic'.
PowerPoint and digital photos, for example, do not compress at all.
A provider who charges for storage might quote using a 4:1 compression ratio,
whereas the industry average is only 2:1 and, depending upon the nature of your
data, you may only get 1:1
- You therefore use more storage than you originally thought and pay
more than you originally intended to. You might not know how much more
until after signing the contract and performing your first series of
backups.
- As multiple versions of your data files are stored over time,
the amount of storage you will need grows further - even if you are not
backing up any more actual data - certain file types are particularly prone
to this, such as Outlook (.pst) files and graphics files.
- After several versions of your files are backed up, the software
will often do a complete new 'snapshot' of certain files - thus potentially
doubling the storage required for these files alone.
A sensible rule of thumb is to assume a doubling of the storage required for
retaining multiple versions of your data over a 12 month period.
The net result is that you pay more than you thought - often considerably more
- and a different unpredictable amount each month.
The Backup Direct™ alternative - simple & honest pricing
Backup Direct™'s is one of the few UK providers offering an open and simple
approach to pricing, with charging based upon the data as you see it on your machine:
- Look at how much data you have on your computers (for example, simply
right-click on the My Documents in Windows Explorer, choose Properties and see how
much data you have).
- Choose an appropriate package from our list (for example choose the
Data 4GB package if you have less than 4GB of data).
- Pay one simple monthly fee.
That's it!
- No variable fees.
- No software licence fees.
- No setup fees.
- Backup as often as you like.
